Styles of Hearing Aids

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)

This style places the receiver inside the ear while a small case is placed outside the ear. It makes for a very comfortable system since only a fraction of the piece is actually inside of the ear, and is barely noticeable. It is the latest in noise-cancelling technology and is capable of wireless connectivity.

Behind-the-Ear

An ear piece is placed inside of the ear and is connected with a piece of clear tubing to a small plastic case that sits behind the ear.  It is capable of accommodating different ear mold types.  This device is easy to clean and handle.

“Mini” BTEs

This device uses a very thin, almost invisible tube that connects the aid inside the ear canal to a case that fits behind or on the ear. It has a comfortable ear piece for insertion, but can also be used with a traditional ear mold. Mini BTEs allow for reduced occlusion (or “plugged up”) sensations in the ear canal, increase comfort, reduce feedback, and accommodate cosmetic concerns for many users.

It also fits behind/on the ear, but is smaller. A very thin, almost invisible tube is used to connect the aid to the ear canal. Mini BTEs may have a comfortable ear piece for insertion (“open fit”), but may also use a traditional earmold.

Bluetooth

The latest technology in hearing aids involves a Bluetooth connection that allows the transmission of sound from Bluetooth capable devices, such as cell phones. The Bluetooth wirelessly picks up the signal from the device and transmits the sound directly to the hearing aid, allowing the user to be hands-free.

ReSound Unite Mini Microphones

Mini Microphones offer a versatile device that transmits speech directly to the hearing aid.  It is a discrete clip-on microphone that helps hear more clearly, allowing one-on-one communication in difficult listening environments.  This device also functions as a personal, portable audio streamer to help you listen to your iPod or laptop.  The microphone can be placed in from of the speakers of a TV or radio and can be streamed directly to your ears.

School Age FM systems

An FM system gathers speech at the voice source using a microphone and then transmits the sound directly to the hearing aid within the ear.  FM systems are able to subdue background sound while enhancing a child’s communication skills by closing the distance between the child and speaker.  For a young child with hearing loss, an FM system maximizes early speech and language development and can help social relationships by supporting verbal communication interaction with adults and peers.
